New Portland Location

As of June 16th, my Portland office will be located at 1318 NW 20th Ave, Suite A4, in Portland, Oregon. Telephone numbers and email address remain the same. An advantage of the new location is street parking is free and usually easier to find than for the 12th Avenue office.
For the past two years in Portland, I have shared the office of Carola DiLorenzo, LMT. During those years, Carola was enrolled in an intensive program studying nutrition while she worked at her massage practice part time. She has now completed her nutrition studies, which gives her a strong new set of skills to offer her clients. At the same time Carola is resuming full time practice, my Portland practice is growing, so Carola and my treatment room usage no longer fit in a monthly calendar. It was a pleasure sharing the NW 12th Avenue location with Carola, Peter & Lynn.

New Staff

For the past five years Jessica Adsit and Marnie Pierce have shared the personal assistant position in my office. Beginning summer term 2010, both of them are going back to school at the University of Oregon, Jessica to pursue a masters degree in education and Marnie to complete a bachelors degree in Psychology. Their service has been invaluable and I wish them both all the best.
Mary Frost is currently in training for the personal assistant position and will be at the helm starting June 18th. Mary brings a wealth of experience from customer service positions with major industries. Welcome Mary!

Fee Increase

As of August first, there will be a $5 fee increase to $130. Over the past four years, my fees have increased an average of 2.3% per year, which is less than the official rate of inflation.

Continuing Education

During May of this year, I attended and presented at the Biannual conference of the Internaitonal Alliance of Structural Integrators (IASI). Particularly interesting was the groundbreaking spinal mechanics and walking gait research presented by Swiss / Canadian researcher Serge Gracovetsky.

For more information about Dr. Gracovetsky's work see:

More fascinating pieces from the conference can be seen on IASI's facebook page at:

During June, I will attend a small symposium of osteopaths and related practitioners in a retreat setting. During the week, each of the twenty participants will make a presentation on a topic related to cranial manipulation. My presentation will be on how tension in nerves, blood vessels and other structures connecting the thorax and the base of the cranium create and maintain cranial base distortions.

Tune-Ups

Life offers many stresses. Some we avoid, some we seek, some we adapt to, and some we heal from. Our bodies accumulate wear and tear, which sooner or later lead to symptoms. Most of us have had the experience of waking up in the morning with a stiff neck. We often blame this on our sleeping position, and while this is possible, more often it was simply that as our bodies continued to adapt during the night we reached a point at which we ran out of adaptive capacity and symptoms appeared. This is essentially the same as bending over to pick up a paper clip and experiencing lasting back pain. The move to pick up that paper clip was only a tiny last straw, most of the problem having accumulated in variously sized increments earlier.

Prevention is better than treatment. A treatment session or two once or twice a year can help good alignment, flexibility and comfort.
