Teaching

Over the years I have taught in several venues including The Upledger Institute, Cascade Institute of Massage and Body Therapies, and privately. Most recently I have begun to offer some courses through the Lane Community College (LCC) massage program. These courses are useful to a range of practitioners both to increase their skills and obtain continuing education credits. My next two offerings through LCC will be a two-day introduction to Upledger CranioSacral Therapy, and a two-day course on prevention and treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Related Upper Limb Repetitive Strain Disorders. To Register for these fall courses contact Lane Community College. lanecc.edu/ce/massage/index.htm

Privately I am offering a series of five classes in visceral manipulation for Structural Integrators. For details see www.jeffreyburch.com/home/jb1/smartlist_4 .

Tutorials / Study groups continue in Eugene for three topic areas, Visceral Manipulation, Upledger CranioSacral Therapy, and Osteopathic Soft Tissue methods. For dates and times please see www.jeffreyburch.com/home/jb1/smartlist_4 .

Homeopathy

Homeopathic flower essences pioneered by Edward Bach MD have long had a valuable place in the healing arts. One of the uses of these remedies is to stabilize a person's body to be able to accept more physical treatment. During a treatment session a person's body will give multiple signals that it has had all the change it can accept for the time being. When this occurs early in the session flower remedies are one of the ways to allow more work to be done. For this purpose I first used Dr. Bach's original 32 flower essences. However, this collection does not always contain the right remedy for a person. I continue to acquire remedies made by others following in Dr. Bach's footsteps including the Columbia Gorge essences and Perelandra essences. Most recently I have acquired the extensive collection of Petite Fleur essences for Texas, nearly doubling the number of essences available in my office for this purpose. For more information see:

Portland

From August 2003 until May 2007 I traveled regularly to see clients in Portland, usually 3 to 4 days every other week. In May of 2007, to better take care of my family life I ceased traveling to Portland to see clients. At that time I referred my Portland clients to other respected practitioners, each of whom is trained in multiple modalities overlapping mine. In January 2008, seeing that my family life had stabilized, and at the request of some Portland clients I resumed traveling to Portland to see clients, but only two days every third week. My life remains centered in Eugene.

Case Study

A woman in her late 30s came to me with multiple chronic complaints of tempero-mandibular joint pain, neck pain and stiffness, headaches, low back pain and bilateral hip joint pain and stiffness. After years of seeking solutions she had stopped working to focus on her health. She regularly did yoga and Pilates that provided some relief. She had tried several types of bodywork and physical therapy, with varying limited degrees of success. She was working with a dentist who specialized in TMJ disorders.

She had a history of multiple hard falls in childhood, and athletic injuries in her teens and twenties. Currently she was taking no medications and had no other health concerns. In a series of sessions we reduced complex cranial distortions and freed several joint capsules, all providing limited relief. The real turning point came in a session where several arterial tensions were released, each radiating from or near the heart to distant points in the body, including the head and each limb.

Arteries should glide well through the tissues of the body and should have reasonable ability to stretch to accommodate movement. Impact injuries are known to injure arteries. As they heal arteries tend to loose elasticity and glide. This creates resistance to movement in the body. Further, if an artery cannot stretch and glide it is more vulnerable to tearing in future bodily injuries. The body then tightens muscles to protect the arteries. In visceral manipulation we routinely work with arteries to free this type of restriction. Muscles quickly respond by relaxing.

What was unusual in this situation was the continuity of so many restrictions all the way to the heart. When the body falls on hard surfaces or is hit hard in the chest the heart will bounce around inside the chest. It can bruise itself and neighboring structures. This also jerks on blood vessels connected to the heart.

For this woman it seemed that several of the many impacts she had received over the years affected her in this way. For more information see www.barralinstitute.com/

Tune-ups

Our bodies have amazing abilities to adapt; yet heir to the major and minor slings and arrows of life, we eventually run out of adaptive capacity and symptoms appear. It is not necessary to wait until these symptoms appear to benefit from treatment. Preventive maintenance on a regular basis can help keep symptoms from arising. Just as visits to the dentist twice a year and changing the oil in your car every 3000 miles helps prevent problems so does receiving a treatment for your body at least every six months.
