Cranial Manipulation is a growing part of Jeff's practice

My interest in CranioSacral® Therapy began in 1983 when I took an introductory workshop from Osteopathic Physician John Upledger. I continued to read extensively on the subject and have used these ideas to some extent in my 21 years of Rolfing® practice. My goals of further training in CranioSacral Therapy got put on a back burner in favor of family needs and a masters degree in counseling.

Cranial manipulation originated in the early years of this century with the work of Osteopathic Physician William Garner Sutherland. He discovered that the several bones of the skull have a slight possibility of movement among themselves. Like all movable parts of the body, cranial motion can become restricted or distorted. Using very gentle manipulation to correct these distortions contributes to the alleviation of many bodily problems.

CranioSacral Therapy and Rolfing® work very well together. Since both methods are descended from early Osteopathic manipulation, reuniting these cousins is synergistic. For example, if the tiny slow movements of cranial motility are balanced, then the bigger movements of joint mobility throughout the body are easier to achieve with Rolfing®.

This year I took the first three in a series of seven CranioSacral seminars with the Upledger Institute. I am registered for two more in 1999 including one on Pediatric CranioSacral Therapy. It is a joy to have my long contemplation of this discipline come into practice.

CranioSacral techniques are now integrated into my Rolfing® practice in the service of the goals of Rolfing®. CranioSacral sessions are also offered separately from Rolfing® for $40.

Four handed sessions now available

The instructor for the first two CranioSacral courses I took was Signy Erickson DC who practices in Bend, Oregon. Since taking my third course I have arranged to work one day per month with Dr. Erickson in her office in Bend doing four handed sessions on her patients. Four handed work is seldom seen outside of a classroom setting, and this is a pity as it is a very powerful tool for working on complex strain patterns. Working directly with Dr. Erickson is also a great learning experience for me.

Dr. Erickson and I will be available for four handed sessions in Eugene for the first time on December 11. The next date for four handed work in Eugene will be in February, exact date to be arranged. Her visits here will be less regular than my visits to Bend.

Visceral Manipulation® is a growing part of jeff's practice

This year I have also taken the first two in a series of seven courses in Visceral Manipulation ® offered by the International Alliance for Health Care Educators, an affiliate of the Upledger Institute. I am registered for four additional four Visceral courses with IAHE in 1999. Visceral Manipulation is the work of French Osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral. These methods began with an exploration of the motility of the thoracic viscera and have since been extended to the whole body. Dr. Barral's anatomically precise assessment methods for body strain patterns are a great help to manual therapists. The organs are delicate and visceral manipulation is appropriately gentle. This work dovetails very well with Rolfing®. I now incorporate Visceral Manipulation into most Rolfing® sessions, but I do not offer separate Visceral sessions at this time.

Cascade Institute

For several years I have taught courses related to biomechanics, part time at Cascade Institute of Massage and Body Therapy. The Institute's negotiations with a local buyer are near conclusion. With this sale, the school will move to a new location allowing its affiliate Cascade Health Center to expand into the facilities at 1250 Charnelton. Several new practitioners will be added to this multidisciplinary health clinic. I am discussing with the owners of the health center, Ruth and Tracy Wise, my participation in this expanded health center.
