Cranial Manipulation is a growing part of Jeff's practice
My interest in CranioSacral® Therapy began in 1983 when I took an introductory workshop from Osteopathic Physician John Upledger. I continued to read extensively on the subject and have used these ideas to some extent in my 21 years of Rolfing® practice. My goals of further training in CranioSacral Therapy got put on a back burner in favor of family needs and a masters degree in counseling.
Cranial manipulation originated in the early years of this century with the work of Osteopathic Physician William Garner Sutherland. He discovered that the several bones of the skull have a slight possibility of movement among themselves. Like all movable parts of the body, cranial motion can become restricted or distorted. Using very gentle manipulation to correct these distortions contributes to the alleviation of many bodily problems.
CranioSacral Therapy and Rolfing® work very well together. Since both methods are descended from early Osteopathic manipulation, reuniting these cousins is synergistic. For example, if the tiny slow movements of cranial motility are balanced, then the bigger movements of joint mobility throughout the body are easier to achieve with Rolfing®.
This year I took the first three in a series of seven CranioSacral seminars with the Upledger Institute. I am registered for two more in 1999 including one on Pediatric CranioSacral Therapy. It is a joy to have my long contemplation of this discipline come into practice.
CranioSacral techniques are now integrated into my Rolfing® practice in the service of the goals of Rolfing®. CranioSacral sessions are also offered separately from Rolfing® for $40.
