Visceral Manipulation for Structural Integrators - Module 1 of 5

    (Advanced Osteopathic Structural Integration Methods)
    Module 1 (of a 5-class series) - Foundations

This course offers powerful new assessment and treatment tools; it is also a paradigm shift. The recipe was meant as a learning protocol to gain experience and confidence as a structural integrator and then after several years of practice let the series go and make it your own.

This class and series will help you take your structural integration skills to the next quantum level. Imagine knowing when and how to work with tissues such as organs, joints, bones, nerves, arteries, dural membranes, the spinal column and beyond. Balancing these tissues is a key to accomplishing the goals of structural integration. All the internal organs, joints (including those of the spinal column), bones, nerves, arteries and dural membranes are a central part of the connective tissue matrix. In most instances these structures are a more powerful entry point for influencing the alignment and mobility of the body than are the myofascia or superficial fascia.

In this class you will learn multiple assessment techniques that allow to you quickly find where to work. (As we all know, figuring out where to work and when to work an area can often be challenging. Not anymore!) Once you know where to work you will learn how to apply several different gentle functional techniques, allowing for a dramatic increase in ROM throughout the entire body and a dramatic increase towards the goals of SI. Learning these assessment methods is like adding MRI, CT scans and Ultrasound to the conventional X rays available in the first half of the 20th century. Decision making about what to do next in each structural integration session becomes quick and precise.

This course sets the stage for the following four courses. In each course you will progressively deepen your assessment & treatment skills and dramatically increase your understanding of the anatomy of the human being.

These courses are approved for IASI Type 1 continuing education credit, and for Rolf Institute continuing education credit. Instructor Jeffrey Burch has been a Rolfer for over 30 years. He is trained to the instructor level in Visceral Manipulation, and has in-depth training in several directions of cranial manipulation. His teaching consistently gets rave reviews.

Location: 880 Nantucket Avenue, Eugene Oregon 97404

    Tuition: $400 per module

There are three prerequisites for this course:
    1. Eligibility for membership in the International Alliance of Structural Integrators. Membership in IASI is not required, just eligibility for membership. For details see www.theiasi.org/join.php
    2. Current malpractice insurance.
    3. Current license to practice (where applicable).

    Visceral Manipulation Foundations

This three-day course teaches the cornerstones of Jean-Pierre Barral's Visceral Manipulation. This course may be taken either as a preview or a review of the assessment and treatment methods of Visceral Manipulation.

Visceral manipulation is a highly anatomy-specific discipline focusing on membranous connections in the body to relieve a range of complaints. With the fundamentals taught in this course it will be possible to successfully treat with less anatomic specificity. Then as the practitioner learns the detailed anatomy of the internal organs and their membranous support structures, in Barral Institute VM courses, effectiveness of treatment will further increase.

    Prerequisites:
~ Open to any health care practitioner licensed to touch.
~ Current proof of malpractice insurance

    Tuition $350.

    Ten Varieties of Functional methods

There are many varieties of Functional Methods. The most commonly practiced variations are Unwinding, and Functional-Indirect. While these two low-force yet powerful treatment methods allow the practitioner to accomplish a great deal, skill in the full scope of functional methods dramatically increases the number of keys on a practitioners ring to unlock well-being for a wide range of client situations. I invite you to pick up those keys one at a time over the course of a year.
This year long course will teach ten distinct functional methods. In the uniqueness and complexity of our clients/patients, each functional method provides another potential avenue to normalize tight or lax tissue in the body. Developing skill in all the varieties will give you a large tool kit with which to address a wide range of situations for your clients/patients. Each method is powerful in itself, and they can be combined to give more variations and stronger effects. Learning all the methods and how they relate to each other will give you a much fuller understanding of how the body changes with functional methods. You will then be able to mix and match techniques to address a wide range of situations.
Along with treatment strategies good assessment skills are essential. In this course Osteopathic Listening will be taught as a primary assessment method. Other assessment methods including mobility testing, orthopedic tests, and manual thermal diagnosis will also be presented.
How to use each treatment method on a range of tissue types will be presented.

    What are functional methods?
Functional methods are low force treatment methods designed to wake up proprioception in the body. They normalize tissue span, tone locally, and relieve the often-complex strains running through the body at a distance.

Where did functional methods come from?
Osteopaths in North America and in Europe developed functional methods over the past century.

How is the class be structured?
The first meeting in January will be two days long. After the first month the class will meet one day each month for nine more months during 2009; February, March, April, May, June, July, September, October and November. Class meetings will run from 9 AM to 5 PM with a one and a half hour lunch break, and 15 minute breaks in the morning and afternoon.
At each of these monthly meetings one variation of functional methods will be presented and practiced. In the month between full day class meetings the course participants will practice the method taught. In the middle of the month there will be a half-day tutorial and practice session. Starting with the second month's all day class meeting each month's class will begin with discussion of the previous month's treatment method.
At each class meeting there will be opportunity for students to practice on each other. At some class meetings other people will be available to practice on.
Details of anatomy will be taught as needed to use the techniques. Additional independent study of anatomy is recommended along with this course.
The instructor will demonstrate the individual techniques and also full treatment sessions.
How to focus the mind for this type of treatment will be discussed and useful meditative strategies offered.
Cautions and considerations for use of these methods will be taught. This will include age related issues, and pathology issues.
Four handed work with the instructor in his practice will be available between class meetings is an essential learning experience 33 hours of four handed time is part of the tuition package. During each month between classes the instructor will be available for email questions.
Between monthly class segments course participants will keep practice logs and journals.

What are the benefits of taking this class?
In this class series you will learn a wide range of highly effective low force treatment methods. You will also learn assessment methods to know when and how to apply the functional methods. Your clients / patients will benefit from more effective treatment. You will benefit from the satisfaction of knowing you can offer your clients / patients more effective methods and by having methods that are easier on your body.

Which varieties of functional methods are taught?
    Regional tissue release (unwinding)
Direction of effort (functional direct) (fascial load)
Direction of ease (functional indirect) (induction)
    Mixed ease and effort
    Long lever vs. short lever
    Recoil
    Centralizing (Hoover technique)
    Walking to corners
    Oscillatory
    Flossing

I already know some of these techniques. Can I take just part of the class series?
Discuss this with the instructor. It is beneficial to take the whole series as additional information may be presented about the techniques you already know. Relationships between treatment methods will be presented to enlarge your understanding. The information about assessment methods, cautions and considerations, and mind focusing offered in each class are essential.

What are the meditation techniques like?
The meditation techniques are playful ways to observe the mind in action, and gradually help it find calmness and stability. These methods are not ritualistic and not tied to any specific spiritual system. Mental openness and stability are essential to reading how to work with each unique client/patient.

    What are the prerequisites?
Applicants must hold a professional license enabling them to engage in touch therapy. This includes AT, DC, DO, LAC, LMT, MD, ND, OT, PT, RN. Holders of other licenses are welcome to apply.
Applicants must present proof of malpractice insurance.

    Are Continuing education credits available?
Certificates of attendance will be issued at each class. Check with your licensing or certifying agency for acceptance.

Where will this class series meet?
This class series will meet at The Studio, 880 Nantucket Ave. Eugene, Oregon 97404. This is a lovely space, which will comfortably accommodate 12 course participants. As space is limited early registration is recommended.
